As the hometown health and wellness leader, Blue KC is committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of Kansas City’s children and their families. Recognizing that our community is only as healthy as those who call it home, we measure progress by our ability to improve health for individuals and families.
The need to address childhood obesity is critical. One in three Kansas City children ages two to 19 is overweight or obese. And the stats show many obese children grow up to become obese adults. Obesity contributes to poor health conditions, including diabetes. If trends continue, this generation of children will have shorter lifespans than their parents — the first generation to do so. In 2011, we committed significant corporate resources over the next five years to fight this disturbing trend. This initiative is a key component of Blue KC’s overall Health Promotions strategy.
